Who I Am

Hi, I’m Don. Conducting and teaching voice is not just what I do, it is who I am. I started at the age of 15 as a sophomore in high school leading a small group singing barbershop and spirituals at my school. As a junior in high school, I started a boy choir at my church. As a senior in high school, I became the student director of the advanced choir. After receiving my B.A. in music education (doing my senior recital in choral conducting) I taught high school choral music for 21 years while working on my master’s degree and D.M.A. in conducting. I then taught at the university level for 25 years.

Celebrating Milestones

1975

Best Decision Ever

Married Karen, who currently sings soprano in the GAMAC Chorale.

1980s

A Lifelong Interest

Taught at Redwood High School and became Founding Director of Visalia’s Mighty Oak Chorus.

1980-90s

Developing the Craft

Taught high school vocal music for 21 years, primarily at Redwood High School in Visalia, CA. Built the high school choral program to 300 students in five choirs.

1998

A New Home

Appointed as Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities at Southern Wesleyan University (SWU) in Central, SC. Became the longest-serving choral professor in the history of the university, which was founded in 1906.

1999

BHS

Began serving on the international faculty of Harmony University (BHS).

2003

Recognized

Received the Ken Dickens Award for Excellence in Teaching at SWU.

2003-04

Recognized

Named SWU’s Faculty Member of the Year.

2005

New Adventure

Founded the Upstate Intercollegiate Choral Invitational Festival for college choirs and SWUFest for high school choirs.

2008

Expansion

SWUFest expanded to include middle school choirs with the introduction of SWUFest Too.

2010

New Festival

Organized the Musica Ecclesia festival for church choirs. Began conducting the Chorale of the Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium (GAMAC).

2015

BHS

Became the Dean of the Directors College of Harmony University for the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS).

2023

Hall of Fame

Inducted into the SWU Fine Arts Hall of Fame.
